Day 1: Arrival in Kigali

Arrive at Kigali airport to be met by your driver-safari guide. Transfer to your hotel for overnight, with a full briefing on your safari.

Overnight: Kigali

Day 2: Kigali – Akagera National Park

After a leisurely breakfast drive to Akagera National Park, stopping en route to visit the Imigongo art center in Kayonza — a unique traditional art by Rwandans whereby cow dung is used to paint homesteads. Thereafter proceed to Akagera Park for an afternoon game drive, exploring the southern part of the park.

Day 3: Full Game Drive in Akagera

The park covers an area of 100,000 ha, following a recent reduction of its original size of 250,000 ha. The topography is characterized by rolling sandstone hills in the west — cut in places by deep, narrow valleys — and floodplains and swamps in the east. The vegetation has been described as the most heterogeneous savanna ecosystem in the region, with over 500 bird species. Along a well-designed network of tracks you can see elephants, buffalo, zebra, bushbaby, hippos, crocodiles, and many other mammal species; on rare occasions leopards, lions, and black rhinos. The game drive takes 5–6 hours, from the south to the north of the park, with a packed picnic lunch. Later in the evening drive back to Kigali.

Overnight: Kigali

Day 4: Kigali City Tour – Drive to Musanze

After breakfast, undertake a city tour of Kigali, including a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial site, the Muslim quarter, and the highest peak in Kigali. Have lunch then drive to Musanze. The 3-hour scenic drive through terraced hills to Volcanoes National Park offers a panoramic view of hilly countryside, home to the endangered mountain gorillas, with stops en route to photograph scenic areas.
